In this module, you'll learn how to set up and operate a sewing machine with precision — understanding tension, stitch settings, presser feet, and common troubleshooting techniques. Alongside machine mastery, you'll explore the full range of hand-sewing and cutting tools, discover what each one is designed for, and develop the habits that keep your workspace organised and your work accurate. By the end of this module, you'll have a solid, practical foundation that will support every project throughout the rest of the diploma.

Discover the building blocks of every great garment — fabric. In this module, you'll develop a thorough understanding of textiles and how the materials you choose directly shape the look, feel, and durability of your designs. You'll explore the characteristics of natural fibres such as cotton, silk, wool, and linen alongside synthetic and blended alternatives, learning how each behaves when cut, sewn, washed, and worn. We'll cover weave and knit structures, fabric weight and drape, stretch and recovery, and how to read and interpret fabric care labels with confidence. You'll also learn how to pre-treat and prepare fabrics before construction — a critical step that prevents costly mistakes. By the end of this module, you'll be able to select the right fabric for any design brief, anticipate how a textile will perform during construction, and make informed sourcing decisions that bring your creative vision to life.

Students apply their pattern drafting skills to construct real garments using industry-standard techniques. This module progressively builds from clean seam finishing and basic garments to professional dressmaking techniques including zips, linings, and tailored finishes.
